The first way that The New Deal Programs & peoples’ organizing successfully alleviated hardship during these times & in ways these efforts fell short is General Motors Strike 1930s. Flint, Michigan was known as a company town because General Motors controlled everything that went on in the city. For example, the mayor,
the police chief, and three city councilmen, as well as Flint’s newspaper, radio station and school officials, either worked for GM, or had worked for them in the past. Four out of every 5 workers worked in one of GM’s many factories. General Motors were upset because they earned only about $1,000 a year. Also, the company
could cut workers’ wages whenever it wanted to. As the assembly line moved quickly, they also received no pay
increase. Individually, autoworkers were powerless to challenge these oppressive conditions, so they began to
join a new union, the United Automobile Workers (UAW). It was a great victory for unions & workers. On December 30, 1936, the union called a for a strike because Officers of General Motors refused to meet with the union. This strike used a new tactic: 3,000 workers stopped the assembly line, put away their tools, and sat
down where they worked. They formed a committee to run the strike and to supervise their activities inside the plant: meals, sanitation, education, and entertainment. Also to defend against the attacks from GM they knew were coming. The labor organizing of the late 1930s in the steel, rubber, and automobile industries was coordinated by a new national organization, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). The CIO organized
all kinds of workers, skilled and unskilled. The New Deal, and workers like those at General Motors, helped make the labor movement strong again in the late 1930s, thus greatly improving the lives of millions of workers.
The second way that The New Deal Programs & peoples’ organizing successfully alleviated hardship
during these times & in ways these efforts fell short is The Great Depression in the 1930s. The Great Depression was so bad that people talked about revolution. Due to banks being closed people lost their savings. In most, cities banks disappeared. President Roosevelt worked with Congress to create agencies & programs that will help people during this time. The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) provide funds for the unemployed. This was the first time that the federal government ever provided unemployment insurance.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 3 million temporary jobs to young men & women aren’t working, while giving them the chance to live & work in the wilderness. The Works Project Administration (WPA)
provided jobs for public works projects. The Many of the New Deal Programs did nothing to alleviate the humiliation that African Americans endured. The New Deal Programs discriminated against blacks.
The third way that The New Deal Programs & peoples’ organizing successfully alleviated hardship during these times & in ways these efforts fell short is Chicago Teachers Strike 2019. Even throughout the walkout, Mayor Lightfoot found herself pitted against the teachers. Many of whom said, “she was failing to keep her promises.” At the same time, opponents of the teachers’ strike said Ms. Lightfoot was giving too many concessions at a time when the school system’s finances, like that of the city, are shaky. People were concerned that the strike created for parents with few child-care options. Also, for athletes weren’t able to participate in sports not play in games due to the strike. After 11 days of striking, the teachers & students prepared to return to school after was reached. In that 5-year deal, the city agreed to spend millions of dollars reducing class sizes. They also promised to pay for hundreds of more social workers, nurses, & librarians. They also have a 16% salary increase over the coming five years.
The final way that The New Deal Programs & peoples’ organizing successfully alleviated hardship during these times & in ways these efforts fell short is Coronavirus Relief for Small Business & Coronavirus Stimulus Package. President Trump wanted to give every American a stimulus check, but the democrats blocked it. They wanted to it be for working Americans only. Congress passed a 2 trillion stimulus bill that would help americans with their bills that President Trump signed into law. Working americans, couples, singles, SSI,
SSA, SSDI, & people who filed taxes in 2018 & 2019 will receive checks. Guidelines for the stimulus package for Americans are: Individuals that make $75,000 or less will get $1200. Couple that make $150,000 or less will get $2400. Heads of household that makes $112,500 or less will get $1200. The Trump Administration & Congress are working on another stimulus package to give the unemployed $2,000. The first stimulus package for small businesses was 350 billion dollars in loans. Those loans for small businesses has ran out. Most businesses didn’t receive the first stimulus package because these banks act like the money it theirs but it’s not. The Trump Administration & Congress are working on another stimulus package to give 450 billion dollars in loans.
In conclusion, there are different ways that The New Deal Programs & peoples’ organizing successfully alleviated hardship during these times & in ways these efforts fell short. The first way that The New Deal
